Shamin
Shamin joined the Perceptual Landscapes project in March 2008, not having worked with technology creatively before. The project involved using MP3 sound recorders to help young people get a better understanding of the views of their local community.
Shamin worked with artist Christian Nold to record sounds and conversations at the Church Street market on a Saturday. There was a diverse mix of ethnic groups and people of all ages visiting and working on the market.
Shamin used MP3 sound recorders to interview members of her community about what it was like to live there. She found differing opinions, from those who loved their area and the mix of individuals from all over the world to those that did not appreciate ‘foreigners’ now being an integral part of their community. This stimulated debate within the group who chatted about why there were comments such as this when they saw everybody as having a place on the market.
Shamin worked with Christian to make a visual map of the area using digital software that outlined people’s thoughts and feelings, to act as a testament to the current political, economic and emotional feel of the area.
Shamin progressed to work with the FreqOUT! team as a support member of the delivery team. She worked to a volunteer agreement and learned how to manage a group during another FreqOUT! project. Following her volunteering role with the project, Shamin hopes to progress into marketing at University.
