Vivendi Youth Volunteers in action January - March 2011

Chelsea Football Club

This Generations Together project involved a Vivendi Youth Media Artist from the Hammersmith and Fulham Young Offenders Team working with a group of retired local residents at Chelsea Football Club.  The group in question are called “Alive and Kicking” and meet once a week at the Chelsea Hub.  They had recently acquired some new media technology yet were not able to use it.  The FreqOUT! team, led by lead artist Melissa Bliss, engaged the group in four digital new media workshops.  The Vivendi Youth Media Artist played an important role in the groups discovery of the technology and this will have a long lasting effect now that the members of the group are more confident in their use of technology.

Sunberry Independent Living Centre

This Generations Together project involved two Vivendi Youth Media Artists from Hammersmith and Fulham working with a group of disabled adults from the Sunberry centre.  One of the VYMAs was from the local Young Offenders Team and the other was from Hammersmith College.  They worked closely with the group, again led by lead tutor Melissa Bliss, and enabled them to not only engage with digital new media but to produce some really interesting media-scapes in and around the Day Centre.  One of the young volunteers enjoyed it so much he invited his girlfriend to take part and both are now actively seeking employment in the care field and the other volunteer was so inspired by the work she made her own digital documentary of the project which she will use for future course/university applications.

St.  Mary Magdalene Primary School

FreqOUT! delivered its short-film “Transitions” digital new media project to the entire Year 5 grade at this small primary school on the local Warwick Housing Estate.  The Vivendi Youth Media Artists, led by lead tutor Mmoloki Chrystie, made four short-films all examining important transitions in their lives.  The films were then showcased within the school.

British Albanian Kosovar Council

FreqOUT! delivered a one day “guerrilla media” workshop in Camden with a group of young second generation Albanian refugees.  The day involved the Vivendi Youth Media Artists capturing the local area in a variety of digital forms and then editing them all together to form a media-scape.  The workshop, led by the energetic and talented FreqOUT! artists Jonathan Munroe, Angel Guinanao and Glen Ranger, engaged these young people with new technology and equipped them with future skills.  The media-scape can be seen virally now online.

Amberley Youth Centre

FreqOUT! delivered a new and exciting “green screen chrome” workshop to a group of Vivendi Youth Media Artists at the Amberley Youth Centre.  The workshop involved the group exploring the potentials of this technology and then creating material to be edited onto pre-recorded film.  The end result was very satisfying and extremely amusing and can be seen virally now online.

Centrepoint Hostel

FreqOUT! delivered two days of digital new media workshops to a group of homeless Vivendi Youth Media Artists at Centrepoint Berwick Street.  Throughout the two days the young people engaged with a variety of technology and FreqOUT! artists and the result was an interesting collection of media-scapes, sound-scapes and short films.  These are available to be seen on the FreqOUT! blog.

Voluntary Action Westminster

FreqOUT! delivered a one day workshop to local young families at the Portman Childcare Centre.  The workshop which included 34 participants (a large number of which were Vivendi Youth Media Artists) and 6 members of the FreqOUT! artist team aimed to capture the essence of the local Church Street neighbourhood digitally.  Throughout the workshop the group were taught new digital skills and together with the images and film that they captured, a collection of media-scapes were formed.  The final edit is available to be seen online.
